We would like to invite all financial professionals to our CFO lunch on November 22 at 11.45am at Colca.
This time, we have invited David Erkens, Professor of Accounting at China Europe International Business School, to talk about the pitfalls of adjusting performance targets during the performance period. He will share with us some insights on how adjusting performance targets in response to unanticipated events, such as lockdowns, affects employee productivity and overall firm performance. The discussion will focus on why it sometimes makes sense to adjust targets downward in response to unexpected adversity even though this undermines long-term goal commitment.
About the Speaker:
Prof. David Hendrik Erkens is Professor of Accounting and Director of the Service Excellence Research Area. At CEIBS he teaches MBA, Executive MBA, DBA, and custom Executive Education courses on management accounting and performance measurement and incentive design. Prior to joining CEIBS, he was a tenured Associate Professor of Accounting at McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University. He earned his Ph.D in Business Administration from Arizona State University and his MSc in International Management from Maastricht University.
Prior to joining CEIBS Prof. Erkens has taught undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in management accounting at Georgetown University and the University of Southern California.
Prof. Erkens' research focuses on the design, implementation, and use of control systems, particularly compensation arrangements, board of directors, and operational controls. His more recent research focuses on how firms use control systems to compete in the digital economy.
